Welder Ignites Cardboard Fire on Nimitz at Norfolk Yard
The Nimitz suffered moderate damage after a welder’s torch started a fire by igniting cardboard in a bulkhead area at the Norfolk naval shipyard. Fire watches failed to notice the heat spreading through a partition until smoke filled the ventilation, with crews evacuating berthing compartments as firefighters located and extinguished the blaze.
