Fire damaged only the attic area of a two and a half story wooden shed on William Lockhart’s Turkey Farm five miles from town near Berryville Pike Friendship. Firemen from South End and Clearbrook credited a nearby cistern for saving the main structure after the Friendship pumper ran dry around 1 am. Cause remains undetermined and comments from Mr. Lockhart were not available.

Virginia Soldier Killed In Atlanta Auto Crash
A Virginia soldier stationed at the Atlanta General Depot died in a crash that also injured another Virginian and two women. Pvt. Arnold Johnson, 21, of Stanleytown, was killed when his car hit a utility pole after skidding about 210 feet and then struck another vehicle. Sgt. Harold Chitwood, 25, of Martinsville, was hospitalized with facial lacerations and possible skull fracture. condition not listed as serious. The two women in the other car, Frances Roberts and Helen McPherson, suffered severe bruises and lacerations. Police said the cars appeared to be racing at the time of the crash.
