Philippines Hit From North to South in Japanese Air Attacks

44th Division En Route to Fort Dix From Carolinas

The Star reports the 44th Infantry Division's vanguard, about 1,200 vehicles and 10,000 men, reached Winchester on route 522 and will clear the area today on their trek to Fort Dix New Jersey from three months of Carolina maneuvers. The other half travels north on route 15 via Warrenton and -burg toward home in Pennsylvania.

Japan claims large Pacific victory in first strike

Tokyo reports Imperial headquarters announcements of major Japanese naval and air successes in the Pacific offensive. It says two battleships and a minesweeper sunk, four heavy cruisers damaged, many merchant ships seized, and scores of planes destroyed, with additional claims of U S carriers sunk and losses minimal for Japan.
