American Destroyer Jacob Jones Sunk by U-Boat
German submarines sank the American destroyer Jacob Jones on December 6 in foreign waters. About 100 crew men served aboard. 37 survivors were rescued while many officers remain missing. Lieut. Com. Death of Stephens City resident Hugh L. Shryock after surgery
Hugh L. Shryock, 47, a well known Stephens City resident, died at Memorial Hospital after an operation for a stomach abscess. He was stricken in Middleburg on business Thursday, transported to Winchester, and died Friday morning. Funeral plans set for Greath City with Rev. M. H. Cline officiating. He leaves a widow Ada Baublitz and daughter Virginia, plus his mother Elizabeth Shryock and four brothers and two sisters. He was a traveling salesman for Interstate Automobile and Gordon Tire, and a member of Knights of Pythias and United Commercial Travellers.
