Missing Navy jet vanishes off Virginia coast
A Coast Guard cutter searched the Atlantic at night for a Navy F4B Phantom II with two men aboard after it disappeared about 35 miles off Virginia Beach during a routine training flight. Pilot Lt. (J.G.) Robert L. Carter, 25, and radio interceptor Lt. (J.G.) James McDonald, 27, both stationed at Oceana Naval Air Station, were unmarried.
