Former Secretary of State Cor dell Hull endorsed the Anglo American loan and trade pact as essential for world peace. He urged support for a $4.4 million loan to Britain and a free trade framework, arguing it marks a final chance to achieve lasting peace and economic prosperity.
The November meeting at Mrs. John Sloat's home included prayer and scripture reading. Mrs Charles Evans Hughes, wife of the retired chief justice, died after a several weeks illness in Washington. She was 81 and the couple celebrated their 57th anniversary the day earlier. The couple wed in 1888.

General Marshall testified before the Pearl Harbor Investigating Committee about warnings on Dec 7 1941 and correspondence urging Dewey to withhold secret code information from the 1944 campaign. He said Stark initially opposed warnings but later relented after Marshall pressed for them. The hearing resumed amid debate over admitted evidence and Marshall’s move to China as Truman’s envoy.
A vast Atlantic search by sea and air was ordered to cover 100000 square miles for 27 men missing after a formation of five torpedo bombers and a rescue plane disappeared northeast of Coccoebu Florida. Navy ordered 248 planes and surface ships aided by storms and weather data.

Joseph S Patterson prominent local grocer dies at home 103 East German Street from heart attack aged 84. Born February 19 1861 he lived in Winchester 34 years conducted a grocery business and belonged to Cork Street Church of Christ and Friendship Fire Company. Survived by sons Edward Patterson Charles Patterson and two daughters Mrs Forney and Mrs Carrell with a third son deceased. brother Rev J O Patterson of Romney West Virginia. Funeral services set for Tuesday.
Senator Byrd met President Truman at the White House to witness the signing of the Byrd-Butler bill placing 100 government corporations under Congressional budget and audit control. The president gave Byrd the signing pen as proof of the historic action. Byrd noted the measure ends a decade long effort to bring these agencies under Congress with assets exceeding 33 billion dollars previously beyond such oversight.

Shenandoah Valley Apple Blossom Festival Corp directors met at Golden Glow Restaurant with 26 board members. They reviewed past history, discussed resuming the fete in Winchester next spring, and appointed a budget advisory committee to set heads of festival departments and headquarters.

Manila December 7 Lt Gen Tomoyuki Yamashita was convicted by a five general military commission of permitting brutalities by Japanese forces in the Philippines. The panel sentenced him to death, stating the crimes were methodically supervised. Yamashita showed nerves before the verdict and bowed to the panel after the sentence. His wife in Tokyo declined appeals while noting the American justice system. He has appeals remaining on his case.
Robert Y. Conrad Post No. 21 met at the Sarah Zane Fire Hall and formed a committee led by C. F. Schenck and A. C. Halvosa to seek a full time veterans service office in Winchester. Eugene Dearing presided as commander. membership reached 500.
Illinois Governor Dwight H. Green condemned the Truman administration as doomed by diplomatic defeats. He urged Republicans to define their course at the National Committee meeting, advocating vigor in foreign policy to aid Poland, the Baltic states, and other nations. The speech surprised GOP leaders and hinted at a 1948 presidential bid.
The Virginia Horticultural Society passed a resolution urging the legislature to tax packed Virginia apples at 1.14 dollars per bushel to fund advertising. The tax would apply to packed apples only, with funds to be managed by a society committee to boost demand amid citrus and banana advertising. Petitions will circulate in apple counties, enforcement by the State Department of Agriculture.
Secretary of State Byrnes told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee he found no proof of disloyalty by two American diplomats named by Maj. Gen. Hurley. He disputed Hurley’s claim that no public China policy statement existed from President Truman or top officials and said Hurley had not asked for such a statement.
Clarke County Junior Women's Club led by Miss Leona Krouse held a Christmas sale in Berryville on December 1. The event raised about 160 from selling foodstuffs stuffed animals aprons and knitted and crocheted articles created by members.
