String of Fire Alarms Plague Winchester Overnight
Fire chief Gene Dailey reports a string of alarms in about 12 hours starting with a 5:30 p.m. gas leak at 366 National Ave. followed by car fires at Loudoun and Gerrard, and Braddock and Piccadilly. A burning smell at Giant Shoe Mart prompted power shutoff. A 4:30 a.m. forest fire near Rt. 608 destroyed a vacation home, then a chimney fire at 541 Courtfield Ave caused slight damage. Dailey urges yearly chimney cleaning and warns hardwoods burn cleaner with less residue.
