A Winchester poll shows most residents oppose local censorship of comic and pocket size magazines, preferring national action or parental responsibility. Among respondents clergy, teachers and shopkeepers express mixed views on censoring horror and detective material for children.
More than 400 attended the Shenandoah Area Council Fourth Annual Recognition Dinner at the Winchester Armory. Marlin S. Eckerd and Rev. Harry M. Crim received the Silver Beaver Award. Five Scouter Training Awards were given to Ralph Rinard, Floyd White, Ben Hoover, A. J. Woodford, and George Collins. Clarence F. Urffer gave the principal address on Camp Rock Enon and growing Scout membership.
H Dennis Hoover principal of Stephens City elementary school was elected president of the District Teachers Association covering Frederick Warren Rappahannock Page Clarke Loudoun Fauquier Prince William and Culpeper counties. He won over B T Cullen by mail ballot cast Nov 1 to 15 and takes office Jan 1 succeeding Virginia Lewis. The district is part of the Virginia Education Association now in its third year. A memorial service is set for Elks Lodge No 867 tomorrow at 5 p.m. and the public is invited.
President-Elect Eisenhower travels aboard the battle scarred USS Helena toward Pearl Harbor as a tropical storm looms and he weighs policy options for Korea. The trip follows his three day war theater tour and includes a possible Hawaii stop before New York.
A delayed action natural gas explosion leveled a three story frame house in Pittsburgh's North Side killing the six Moulis children and injuring their parents. The blast followed a car crash into a retaining wall rupturing an exposed gas main, with John Liput arrested on a man slaughter charge after being held for the coroner.
The U S Fifth Air Force reports repelling the largest enemy night air attack of the Korean War as President-Elect Eisenhower departed Korea. Allied radar tracked 11 hostile aircraft toward Seoul, with planes described as small propeller-driven. One F86 was lost that week. five Allied planes were lost overall. Sabre pilots downed four Russian MIG-15s. 15,000 Communists were killed, wounded, or captured in November ground fighting.
Four high school pupils returning from a dance were killed when their car skidded off a bridge near Somerset Pennsylvania, plunged 60 feet onto railroad tracks and burst into flames. All victims were Somerset residents about 16 years old. Firefighters could not save them as the car burned on the tracks.
Striking flight engineers returned to work at Eastern Airlines and both sides agreed to mediation of a wage dispute. Normal service resumed immediately with the Constellations previously grounded. The first flight departed Miami at midnight.
A Cuban Star of the East airliner crashed into the sea near Bermuda three miles off Kindlay Field with 42 aboard. Four survivors and ten bodies were recovered as Coast Guard and Air Force vessels searched the scene. Cuban officials claimed six survivors but verification was unavailable.
The Winchester parking meters have generated roughly 163000 in six years with annual averages near 27000. Over six years overtime parking fines total about 13000, though not all attributed to meter operation. Traffic congestion remains a growing concern despite meters.
Leonard D. Ward of Pontiac driving a Baker Driveways car carrier woke to find his rig at speed on Millwood Ave east of the B and O tracks. His braking failed and the Baker tractor pushed a saddle mounted GMC and its tow truck onto Woodrow Moore’s lawn, uprooting a maple. Damages exceed 13000. Ward suffered a head cut and finger injury while the GMC driver was unharmed.
Gen Douglas MacArthur told the National Association of Manufactures there is a clear definite solution to the Korean conflict and that it can be executed without heavy casualties or broader conflict. He referenced President-elect Eisenhower in a first public note since the election while declining to reveal details.
Virginia lawmakers prepared to wrap a brief special session in Richmond with redistricting bills advancing. Arlington Alexandria gained a pair of senators, while Henrico Chesterfield received a floater delegate, amid filibusterings and political maneuvering.
