Reports indicate air strikes by Chinese forces in the Shanghai region with new machines tuned up. United States Consulate and mission officials continue to express fears for the safety of thirteen Americans said to be in the area.
Shanghai reports say two Chinese bombers attacked Japanese positions near the former Idzumo anchorage and over the Whangpoo river. Japan claimed 13 of China's 300 Soviet built aircraft shot down in an air battle near Nanking, while China massed more Soviet aircraft for new raids. New Soviet built bombers arrived at Hankow and were being prepared by pilots as the Yangtze delta campaign advances slowly for Japan.
A reader argues radios loudly used at odd hours violate laws and drowns the Friendship Fire Company siren. The letter proposes stiff fines and even soundproof confinement to deter excessive volume and force reform.
Chief C. W. Hollis announced a local police representative may attend the FBI National Police Academy for a 12 week session beginning January 10. The chosen officer must commit to full attendance and apply vigorous effort, with travel and living costs covered. training aims to improve local police methods and reporting.
Zack McDaniel, a 54 year old Frederick county farmer, cannot raise 2000 dollars for bond while awaiting hearing on charges of assaulting Robert Clayton Marple of 210 East Clifford street. Marple remains hospitalized with a fractured skull from the street attack. Marple identified McDaniel as the assailant after being brought to Memorial Hospital for confrontation. McDaniel, married with several children, denies involvement. No hearing date yet set.
Daniel F. Miller aged about 100, a Confederate veteran and Frederick County resident, fell on a step near Albin and fractured his hip. He was hospitalized at Memorial with Dr. J E Harris and Dr. E C Stuart in attendance. he remained cheerful despite severe pain as his son Charles Miller in Chicago was notified.
The regular monthly meeting of the Friendship Fire Company will be held Thursday evening December 2 at 8 o'clock. All members are urged to attend. Captain Richard Boxwell presides.
Winchester Lodge of Elks will hold its annual memorial service at Christ Episcopal Church at 3 p.m. Sunday December 5. Judge D Lindley Sloan of Cumberland and Maryland Court of Appeals will deliver the address. James C Hughes will preside with Rev Robert B Nelson assisting. The Chanters led by Floyd Haines will provide music as lodge members attend in a body from the Elks' Club.
Twenty four lines resume normal service in 16 states after a federal conciliation pact. The agreement ends the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen strike with wage increases but no closed shop. A one year contract sets mileage pay rises and a bonus plan, while suits against the union are dropped.
At the Winchester Greyhound terminal it was stated the Capitol line between Washington and St. Louis, disrupted by the strike, would resume regular service later today. The Atlantic Greyhound line from Washington to the south via Winchester was unaffected as its drivers are nonunion.

Edith Maxwell, formerly a Wise County schoolteacher, surrendered to Virginia state prison after a 20 year murder sentence for killing her father Trigg Maxwell. She arrived with her brother, underwent fingerprinting and medical checks, and begins routine confinement per Wise County Circuit Court orders.

Lieutenant Patrick Booth of the British Royal Navy was killed in a plane crash reported to Winchester. He is described as the brother of actor and playwright Thomas Macauley Booth, whose marriage to Anne Tucker McGuire was celebrated in the spring. Details remain unavailable. Mrs H McGuire notified The Star. Booth planned to sail to England this month to spend Christmas with his parents. it was unclear if he would depart earlier due to his brother’s death. The Booths were guests at the McGuire residence for Thanksgiving and had often visited since their marriage, meeting in England while Mrs Booth starred in Three Men On A Horse.
Santa plans a parachute landing at Handley campus on December 13 at 3 pm in Winchester for a brief stay of two to three days. He will return Christmas Eve for The Chanters program, aided by The Evening Star, merchants, and local groups.
