Ragpickers Making A Living At Bogota Dump
In Bogota the 230 unionized ragpickers at the city’s largest garbage dump work from dawn, earning about 7.50 to 12 dollars weekly. The union formed in 1961 and charges members and private collectors, while bones sold for glue and recyclables net a few cents per pound. The scene highlights poverty with per capita income around 650 dollars annually and harsh daily labor.
