Ashland Virginia police believe a family dispute over employing a housekeeper sparked the pistol slaying of Spottswood Keene the town attorney. Dr Frank L Hughes 57 uncle of Keene was charged with murder and felonious assault as authorities described the domestic argument preceding the shooting which left Keene dead after collapsing in a hallway. The revolver was found on an upstairs bed with six shells an arrest said. Keene had run for the House of Delegates 11 years earlier and was a law partner of Beecher Stallard of Richmond.
Werner David Nordheim 43, owner of Southern Scrap Company, died at City Hospital Martinsburg at 3 a m after a heart attack. Born January 25 1909 in Geldern Germany he served in World War II, moved to Winchester in 1949, lived at 128 North Washington Street with wife Lucy Kennard and daughter Martha. Funeral to be held in Staunton tomorrow. flowers not desired.
Police took Cormack F. Mc Nelis and Relph Mastermonica into custody within 24 hours of the Western State Penitentiary breakout. The pair, armed and helped by a tunnel setup, were captured after separate pursuits in Keesport and downtown Pittsburgh.
Smyth County grand jury urged jail sentences for convicted drunken drivers in reports to Circuit Court Judge Thomas L. Huns? The panel cited 57 drunken driving arrests from Jan 1 to Nov 12, including 23 in Marion, and said stricter enforcement would curb violations on Smyth County roads.

Secretary of Labor Maurice Tobin urged the CIO to negotiate a quick merger with the AFL to present a united labor front to the incoming Republican administration. He warned that Democratic gains could be undermined and called for unity as CIO factions vie for the presidency of the CIO amid a split convention.

A lodge explosion and blaze near Sackett, Pennsylvania killed a young mother Helen Mason and her three children Mary Jane Charles Jr and John. The father Charles Mason Sr was severely burned and cousin Norman Keeler was injured. Police said the blast started during an attempted kerosene stove fire.

A frame house in Charlottesville burned in 45 minutes on Saturday night killing three infants aged five months eighteen months and three years. Delos and Elizabeth Bell lost their children while two other youngsters and a disabled woman escaped. Investigators suspect a hot coal dragged from a stove started the blaze. The family resided in a wooded area about a mile from Charlottesville.
