Russian forces push toward Bucharest after capturing Ploesti oil fields and advancing about 40 miles in one day. Moscow reports 17 miles from Bucharest as the Red Army moves through occupied Romania with reports of open roads and a day of rapid gains.
London reports on August 31 claim Bulgaria aided the Germans after professing neutrality. The Bulgarian armistice delegation is held in Cairo awaiting Allied terms as Lincoln MacVeagh delays his return. Greeks and Yugoslavs, now occupying regions, weigh in on the dispute.
Winchester and Frederick County men are set to report for induction next month. Twenty will mobilize with 12 city residents leaving September 21 including Funk Chamberlin Nelson Cooper Calvert Pap pas Grim Smith Barman Wilson Hartbeck among others. Frederick County registrants depart September 12 listing Rush Wiley Marple Bartley Painter Braithwaite Combs Bunner and others.

Strike votes from five mines show majority backing work stoppage at three pits while one voted against and another deadlocked.
American Havoc dive-bombers destroyed an ammunition dump southeast of Dieppe in the Darques Forest at Gen. Montgomery's request. Marauder bombers attacked Cezembre island again, while Halifax bombers and Mosquitos targeted German industry and transport in northern France and Germany amid poor weather.

The ninth Blood Donor Clinic opened at the Presbyterian Church Annex with all appointments filled on the first day. Four members join the Gallon Club: Hale C. Moore, Carl G. Wilkins, Jay H. Lowden, Arlie C. Long. Seven time donors include Mrs. Joe Levi and others. 873 registered by noon, 86 on Wednesday. The Motor Corps assist donors without transport. nurses volunteer their services to support the clinic’s Friday needs.
FRANCE American armored spearheads within 83 miles of Germany and 33 miles from Belgium while British forces hold Amiens and push along the Channel coast. Remnants of the 19th Army retreat in the Rhone valley as the southern invasion advances. BALKANS Red army enters Bucharest after taking Ploesti oil fields. Bulgarian envoys travel to Cairo for armistice talks. ITALY Allied war headquarters report Halmahera island bombarded for the fourth time in two weeks. Aleutians planes strike Paramushiro. ASIA Chungking reports defenders still fighting near Lishui and Hengyang as Japanese clash with Chinese forces south of Hengyang.
Allied communiques recap shows at least 175 ships sunk in August with 18 combat vessels. over 500 minor craft wrecked or damaged, mainly in China. Submarines sank 52 ships in August, marking their biggest month of the war in a sharp contrast to Nipponese losses.
Elks Club No 867 voted to sponsor the Virginia War Fund Drive for Frederick County and the city. Melvin McChesney named chairman and John I Sloat treasurer of the drive committee. Local quota around 20000. drive runs October 5 to November 1. Robert F Nelson of Richmond spoke on the war effort.
British tanks seized Amiens and led a 60 mile advance across the Somme in 48 hours as American and British columns overran Laon and pressed toward Belgium. German resistance collapsed in open flight while Rouen and Abbeville areas were cleared, signaling a major push toward the Reich.
