U S Army air force Flying Fortresses bombed a Japanese heavy ship squadron, with one big ship sunk and another probably down while a third remained damaged and burning. In Europe the Reds repelled Nazi assaults on Stalingrad as battles raged along the Volga and Caucasus fronts.
National Fruit Product Co Inc reports incoming apple shipments to its Winchester plant. The notice includes internal reference 8-29-1p-31.
Cemetery Committee announces a chicken and ham supper at Macedonia Church on September 4. Funds raised support cemetery needs and church activities. Proceeds benefit local community programs and maintenance.

Senate finance panel plans to re assess the Ruml plan for pay as you go income tax collections before voting on a House backed 5 percent wage and dividend levy starting January 1. Senator Byrd says Ruml could testify next week and a withholding approach may be worked out. A payroll levy would deduct 5 percent from most salaries with exemptions, and by March 15, 1944, the year end tax balance would be settled.

In Norfolk Virginia on August 29 two seven and three year old girls Judith Wood and Barbara Ann Wood died when their home burned before 3 am. A roomer Lillie Brown escaped by jumping from a second floor window and suffered burns. Police report notes the blaze started at 2 55 am and investigators listed the family as Slaton B. Wood and Florence H. Wood.
Richmond notes the September term of the state supreme court of appeals may rule on a writ of error petition filed by Samuel Legions' attorneys. Legions, convicted in Loudoun County Circuit Court and sentenced to die, had his execution stayed multiple times as prosecutors described the alleged home invasion in Leesburg and threats to a white man his wife and infant.

Recaptured Chuhsien Lishui and surrounding areas tighten control along the Chekiang-Kiangsi rail line, with heavy casualties reported on both sides.
Civil defense authorities announce a meeting of Air Raid Wardens and Fire Watchers on Monday August 31 at 8 o clock in the Sarah Zane Fire Hall. All interested are urged to attend as classes to begin that evening for the new wardens and watchers group.
