Led by Ed Deaver who killed a neighbor in a water dispute seven criminally insane inmates escaped the North Carolina State Hospital in Raleigh after forcing guards to unlock outside doors. Mrs. M. B. Janney Dies After Brief Illness
Mrs. M B Janney of Middleway Jefferson county West Virginia died yesterday from a cerebral hemorrhage. She was stricken Sunday and lingered less than two days. She lived much of her life in Middleway and moved to Charles Town briefly before returning to Middleway with her son Eldridge D Janney. Surviving are two sisters Misses Elizabeth and Betty Barnes and another son John Janney along with three grandchildren. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 3 PM from the Middleway home with burial in Masonic Cemetery.

Textile industry refuses to confer as strike threat grows
The Cotton Textile Institute told the National Labor Relations Board it will not negotiate with unions to avert a looming textile strike. George A. Sloan, president, warned that using strikes as pressure would set a dangerous precedent and urged immediate code changes to raise wages and cut hours. The interior improvements reflect local interest in the historic courthouse. Col James Wood built the first 1745 structure on land given by Thomas Lord Fairfax. The original log building was 40 feet square, repaired in 1826 with a town clock added. A five foot wall once surrounded the grounds with a whipping post and pillory, and the present building dates to 1840.
