Gov. John B. Connally of Texas triumphs on the convention floor as he savors victory with his wife during the early hours. The convention backs the credentials committee report, denying an opposition Texas faction and strengthening Humphrey’s lead for the Democratic nomination.
Prague AP President Ludvik Svoboda told Czechoslovaks liberal reforms will persist as Warsaw Pact troops withdraw gradually. He affirmed a socialist order with democratic humanist elements, while noting ongoing Soviet influence and potential reimposition of press censorship. Troop talks followed Moscow talks with Dubcek.
American artillery bases along the northwest infiltration corridor near Saigon endured a fierce 200 round rocket and mortar barrage followed by a weak infantry push. U S headquarters cites 7 700 enemy killed in nine days of Viet Cong assaults and reports heavy shelling from the DMZ to the Mekong Delta as B 52s strike targets.
Washington AP reports doctors at Walter Reed Army Hospital describe Dwight D. Eisenhower as still critically ill after multiple heart attacks but now express cautious optimism. School officials announce that seventh graders at Winchester Intermediate and eighth to twelfth graders at Handley High may pay textbook rental fees at Handley by 4 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. tomorrow. Fees must be paid by tomorrow evening for textbooks on the first day of school. City schools open Thursday. Cool, dry weather returns with a 52 degree low at the Winchester Fruit Research Laboratory and a noon temperature of 67 with highs in the 70s. A year ago today it was 79.
Clarke County Public Schools opened for the 1968 69 session with a full day's schedule. Frederick County students were in the second day of the new session and Winchester students return Thursday. An orientation for all incoming Handley High School students was scheduled today.
Clarke County Board of Supervisors will hold a special meeting tonight at 8 at the courthouse in Berryville. The purpose is to give residents a chance to present views about the injury observed to trees in the county.
Virginia delegates opened their caucus to all candidates with Humphrey favored by most. The test vote 36 to 9 showed Humphrey leading anti Humphrey forces, and a split roll call later 22 to 21 against seating Texas. Governor Godwin absent due to family matter, McCarthy prospects worry some delegates amid Nixon polling.
Frederick County Board of Supervisors expressed grave concern over a rat infestation spreading from subdivisions east of Winchester after the Greenwood Road dump was closed on July 31. The board directed the county attorney to draft a resolution urging the city to pursue relentless extermination and report progress, amid reports of rats extending into the east side of town and even Washington Street.
President Johnson turned 60 in Austin with no public birthday observances. The White House offered little detail about his plans while the Democratic nominating convention proceeds in Chicago. At 60 and amid Vietnam and civil unrest, Johnson shows a grayer, thinner appearance and no current term ambitions.
