Candidate Beaten in Saigon Amid Election Turmoil
In Saigon a self described leftist antigovernment candidate Tran Tuan Nham was beaten and arrested during a protest as South Vietnam neared the end of its first week of political crisis. Police clashed with Nham and supporters in the main square after he displayed a poster mocking President Nixon. Nham, who has been arrested twice recently, accused U S and Thieu police of tearing down posters and threatened self immolation. The lower house elections are Sunday and Thieu may yet decide whether to run alone on Oct 3. U S officials warned of potential aid reductions if Thieu runs an unopposed race. Thieu plans no public statement until after Sunday's vote.
