Senate opposition grows to defense tax plan changes

Washington reports mounting Senate resistance to the Finance Committee plan to stiffen the defense tax bill by lowering personal income exemptions. The proposal would force about 7 million more filers and end the community property filing practice in eight states. German Report Sinks 6000-Ton British Freighter

Berlin reports the German air force sunk a 6,000-ton British freighter from a convoy in the St George channel between Ireland and Wales. It also says Tobruk harbor was damaged by a weekend Stuka attack, with seven British planes shot down and a bombing of British east coast targets announced.

Retail Gasoline Prices to Be Announced for East

Washington August 26 Leon Henderson price administrator said he expects to announce a retail gasoline price program for the eastern seaboard within 48 hours. His office met with petroleum industry marketing committees but details of the ceiling were not disclosed. He noted restrictions in operations and projected curtailment may not offset profits from high demand in the first seven months and that dealer tank wagon prices had not advanced by major oil companies.

Government Sets Apple Purchase Prices for 1941 Crop

The Agriculture Department announced prices for buying the 1941 apple crop to offset export market losses. Opening U S No 1 Jonathans Grimes Golden and Wealthy apples will be bought by the government at predefined packed bushel basket prices about 20 to 25 cents above last season. Over 10 000 Report For Work At Kearny Shipyard

At Kearny New Jersey the Federal Shipbuilding and Dry Dock yard reported 10 889 workers on the day shift, 97.3 percent of the pre strike level, as Admiral Bowen said the yard is being run under Navy control. The plant, owned by United States Steel, could be sold to the Navy, while ships and expansion plans proceed with several vessels on the ways.

Williams Found Alive After Missing From Middletown Home

Milton Williams age 72 of Mt Williams was found alive but very weak in woods on the Lottie Boyer farm two miles west of Middletown after a search by 20 to 25 volunteers. He had been missing since Saturday morning from the Kline Nursing Home and suffered amnesia, high blood pressure, and exhaustion. He is being treated at a hospital after being transported by Omps ambulance.
