President Eisenhower accepted the Republican nomination for a second full term in the White House and declared peace for all time as the party of the future’s goal. He framed the campaign around unity and renewal for the nation.
In San Francisco the Republican convention closed amid high energy as Eisenhower accepted a bid for re election and urged peace for all time while Nixon followed with a high minded speech. The crowd cheered the president and his running mate and surveys noted strong independents support.
In Nicosia the British government stands firm on surrender terms offered by Governor Sir John Harding. The EOKA rebels reject the conditions and threaten to resume violence, hoping to reopen negotiations by midnight Monday. The offer remains open for three weeks.
Harvey Barton Jr of Schaefferstown Pa was elected president of the Cumberland Valley Volunteer Firemen's Association for the coming year on the second day of the 55th annual Martinsburg convention. New officers include Paul Phillippy Harrisonburg Va first vice president Raymond Kimble Hagerstown Md second vice president R J Long Sr Martinsburg third vice president and Clyde Frankenberry Martinsburg secretary. George Ridgely Funkstown Md was re elected treasurer Rev Benjamin Blubaugh Baltimore Md re elected chaplain Rudolf Wertime Greens Castle Pa re elected attorney with John A Boyd remaining board chairman and E Wade Thomas outgoing president named delegate to the Pennsylvania State Firemen's Convention. Outgoing board members include H M Layman Schaefferstown Clyde Frankenberry and Merle.
Dr. L P Batjer principal physiologist of the US Department of Agriculture arrives for Senator Byrd's annual orchard picnic at Rosemont Orchard near Berryville expected to start at noon on Saturday August 25 with rain contingency in Berryville canning plant.
A five nation committee led by Australia’s Prime Minister Menzies urged Egypt to place the Suez Canal under international control after India and Russia blocked a delegation. The plan envisions Egypt sharing operation with an international board, while France prepared for possible force and troops moved to the Med.
New York woman Peaches Browning famed as a former child bride of the 1920s died at age 46 after a fall in her apartment bathroom. Authorities ordered an autopsy after the medical examiner protested the lack of notice, and police opened an investigation. Browning had a long history of epilepsy alcoholism and malnutrition.
Adlai Stevenson assailed President Eisenhower for an ill conceived charge that Democrats seek to set group against group. He spoke at his Libertyville area farm awaiting his new press secretary Clayton Fritchey and campaign aides before plans for next week's flying trip to boost Democratic turnout in November.
Decomposed body of infant Peter Weinberger found 51 days after kidnapping from Westbury New York home. Angleo J. LaMarca, cab driver, claimed he abandoned the month old child July 5 after demanding $2,000 ransom. Nassau County police and FBI editors reported the arrest and ongoing investigation.
The July rise in cost of living by seven tenths of one percent spurs wage gains for about 1 percent of the workforce as inflation pressures persist. Government data show continued cost increases and labor responses in the market.
In Bamberg Germany seven American soldiers were sentenced by a U S Army court martial to life imprisonment for the rape of a 15 year old German girl and three others to 40 years each. The proceedings followed testimony in which the girl fainted twice and a deposition was taken at her bedside.
The United Nations in New York announced the dismissal of Victor Petov a Soviet translator in its secretariat amid U S espionage charges against him.
Virginia Governor Stanley expresses belief that his no integration program has majority backing after receiving petitions from about 30,000 signers in Norfolk Portsmouth. A 10-person delegation presented the three line petitions urging action to keep schools segregated, while Stanley praises the Gray Commission but plans to adopt most of its proposals with safeguards. He says no school will close unless a child chooses to attend a different race school.
Virginia State Senator Garland Gray repudiates the proposed pupil assignment plan aimed at avoiding enforced racial integration. He warns it will not prevent integration and could trigger widespread school closings, urging Virginia to resist federal civil rights pressures and preserve state sovereignty.
Marilyn Fagan 20, wife of Alachua County prosecutor Osee Fagan, was found shot to death at their Bainesville home. Authorities sought Phil Singer, a 41 year old deaf mute, for questioning. Singer had prior trespass and disturbance convictions. The case occurred as the couple's children, Lyn 6 and infant Osee Jr., were present in the home.
The Georgia apple, 22 feet in circumference and weighing 5200 pounds, is a steel and concrete sculpture on a pedestal in Cornelia Habersham County. It joins another large red apple near the Elks Club in Cornelia, both created by J. F. Rodman. The original plaster apple dated to 1927, replaced after weather damage, and the two cement apples remain as landmarks.

On the Gaza border Egyptian and Israeli forces exchanged fire with both sides reporting first shots. An Egyptian spokesman said 15 minutes of automatic gunfire near Deir el Ballah with no Egyptian casualties. An Israeli patrol said at Kissufim area Egyptian machinegun and mortar fire occurred. a patrol car was damaged but no injuries reported.
