In Philadelphia on Aug 24 Little Verna Michael leaned over a railing as a playful puppy romped nearby. The puppy collapsed the railing and the girl fell three stories but landed on the pup. Doctors say she remains in critical condition with internal injuries and broken leg and collarbone.

The battleship Pennsylvania, flagship of Admiral Louis M. Nurton, was struck by a Japanese torpedo bomber near Buckner Bay Okinawa on August 12.
