Man Charged in Alleged Assault on Afton Mountain

Nelson County authorities charged 28 year old Richard Heatwole of Waynesboro with felonious assault and attempted rape after a Monday night assault on a young woman on Afton Mountain. Heatwole was arrested Tuesday near here after a large manhunt aided by tracking dogs helicopters and unmarked cars. He is held in Nelson County jail in lieu of 20000 bond awaiting a September 14 preliminary hearing. the victim is from Rockingham County.

California fires race through 3450 acres threatening condor sanctuary

Fire crews faced Santa Ana winds and high heat as three blazes scorched more than 3450 acres of brush in Southern California. The largest fire burned near Sespe Creek in Los Padres National Forest east of Ventura, threatening the endangered California condor sanctuary with about 350 firefighters on scene and no reported injuries or structures damaged. The blaze, possibly sparked by illegal fireworks, forced containment efforts despite shifting winds and scorching temperatures reaching 102 degrees in Los Angeles.

Second Victim Dies From Rt 50 Crash in Clarke County

Pauline Bridgett of Paris Virginia died at Winchester Memorial Hospital after a two-vehicle collision Monday night at the Route 50 and 340 intersection in Clarke County. Manuel Jackson Bailey of Delaplane died at Winchester Hospital, and James Henry of Middletown survived the crash.
