Death recalls war episode and Lincoln pardon
The Clarke county death of James Van Meter at eighty eight recalls a Civil War saga. He was captured by an Ohio regiment and sixteen months later Lincoln ordered his release allowing a return to service. A wounded Federal colonel was aided by Mrs Van Meter whose actions helped the officer reach Washington. Detective Arthur Scrivner’s bullet wounds and pursuit of a escaped convict are noted alongside commendations.
