Methane Explosion in Virginia Mine Kills Four
A 1977 blast at Berryville No 2 mine in Lee County Virginia killed four miners and injured none of sixteen others. Inadequate ventilation allowed an explosive methane buildup, ignited by a cigarette lighter found at the scene. The lighter’s ownership was undetermined and fingerprints were not recovered. Miners had smoked underground despite a no smoking policy that was not strictly enforced.
