Governors of Maryland Virginia and South Carolina among guests attend Smith ceremonies as 114 radio stations plan to broadcast the speech. Weather forecasts threaten possible showers that could disrupt the program, with organizers urging attendees to seek shelter if needed.

A heavy rain and lightning storm last night flooded downtown streets from curb to curb and caused localized damage. Underground sewers narrowly prevented widespread flooding in North Loudoun street while a lightning strike destroyed a barn near Bunker Hill, West Virginia, with a $5,000 insured loss.
Five persons were killed when a 2,300‑volt high power line toppled to the ground during a wind storm in Phoenix. Richard Miller, his wife, and a son died instantly. Miller’s son Wesley and neighbor Carl Meeks perished while trying to rescue them.
President Coolidge and Mrs. Coolidge spent a relaxed day on Lake Superior aboard the Nellewood, a 70 foot cabin cruiser loaned by Frank Woods. They wandered the shoreline with a small group, had a picnic luncheon, then visited the estate of H. L. Gary on Madeline Island for tea.

The Star story notes Robbins on Front Royal jurors in the Robinson case received checks with no funds in Warren county banks. Local treasurers supply funds and are reimbursed by the state. A L Warthen is Warren county treasurer. Officials said the issue may be a misunderstanding and arrangements would be made to honor the jurors. No report of the difficulty had been made to state comptroller E R Combs or auditor C Lee Moore.
Gene Tunney retired heavyweight boxing champion arrived at Plymouth on the Mauretania and prepared to travel to London through mist and rain. He met British and American reporters in his cabin and declined to answer questions about a forthcoming marriage, calling it private.
The infant child of Mr D C O Leary and Mrs O Leary died this week and was buried yesterday afternoon in a Catholic Cemetery. Rev Father Thomas B Martin of Sacred Heart Catholic Church officiated at the last rites.

The third annual apple growers picnic will be held Saturday at Gov. Byrd s Rosemont farm orchard near Berryville Clarke County with rain or shine. If needed the packing sheds will host the event for up to 1500 attendees. Speakers include Dr Charles Brooks H L Bonham and Edwin Smith. A practical apple packing demonstration will follow with grading in baskets and barrels.
