In three days of fighting near Da Nang South Vietnam a CH 46 Sea Knight helicopter flies a sling load of supplies to the 27th Marine Regiment in the Elephant Valley. The base lies in the mountains west of Da Nang as U S Marine troops report heavy enemy losses in the action.
A Shenandoah Hills neighborhood meeting discussed a rat infestation spreading from an abandoned dump east of Winchester. Residents plan nonlethal poison with city or county help, while awaiting expert guidance and approval.
Winchester Parks and Recreation says today is the last Free Swim Day this season due to area schools opening Aug 26. The pool will reopen on Tuesdays for general admission after today until season end. A small dog on N Loudoun St climbs a tree trying to catch a squirrel this morning, the tree slanted.
President Johnson told a Veterans of Foreign Wars convention in Detroit that the United States will not move toward de escalation until North Vietnam shows sincere willingness to end the fighting. Rain totals reached .66 inches in Berryville with lighter amounts elsewhere.
Berryville officers report two men Richard Lee Nicholson Jr and Julian F Boyer both 20 were ordered held for Clarke County Circuit Court grand jury action on charges of abducting and criminally assaulting a girl under 16. Bail bonds set at 8500 each. The incident occurred July 20 when the girl was sitting on steps outside a Berryville home.
Army doctors at Walter Reed report General Eisenhower remains in critical condition after another day of irregular heart rhythms. They say his prognosis is guarded, with a favorable trend but no halt to the underlying heart attack problem, and they note no need for electrical heart-shock intervention in the past 24 hours.

U S headquarters reported heavy fighting across South Vietnam as allied forces killed 739 enemy and 69 Americans since Sunday. Battles centered around Tay Ninh and Bin Long provinces with massed North Vietnamese divisions.
