Detroit faced a sudden strike by 1 000 street cars and 1 650 buses halting service and delaying about 400 000 workers. Mayor Edward J. Jeffries warned he could call on government might to end the stoppage while AFL and CIO factions argued over bargaining recognition and a closed shop.
