Cuban freighter diverted to U S as 11 seek asylum
Eleven crewmen of the Cuban freighter Bahia de Nipe were brought ashore at Norfolk after dropping anchor off Cape Henry and seeking political asylum in the United States. The State Department said the defectors would be allowed to remain, while the ship could be reclaimed by Cuba. A Coast Guard cutter removed the defectors and 23 others remained under surveillance.

Virginia July revenue climbs over prior year totals
Virginia's July revenue collections for the new fiscal year rose by about 8.49 million to exceed 60.6 million dollars. General fund receipts gained 514,770 with big increases in cigars and cigarettes 412,885 and individual incomes 260,000 and corporate incomes 250,652. Beer taxes fell 904,643 while gasoline taxes rose 624,573 and unemployment payroll taxes grew 300,620. State ABC store gross sales reached 9,287,502 up 373,088 from July 1960.
