NORFOLK Aug 18 Virginia appears set to celebrate Thanksgiving on November 23 instead of November 30 Governor Price on vacation at Virginia Beach indicated he will follow the President's proclamation. He said Virginians have always followed the presidential proclamation and see no reason to do otherwise this year.
Citizens of Stephens City will vote next Tuesday night on forming a volunteer organization. The message notes fire losses are irrecoverable despite insurance and urges residents to consider forming the group.
Four hundred twenty five men of the Artillery of the Pennsylvan ia National Guard passed through Winchester today en route to Pittsburgh marching by motor truck. Col Eric Fisher Wood led the unit stopping at Star Fort near Winchester for lunch and a brief visit to a historic site. The convoy then continued via Route 7 toward Berkeley Springs and Breezewood with an overnight stop planned near Bedford Pennsylvania. Local units from the 116th Infantry Virginia National Guard return tomorrow morning from Manassas maneuvers. The infantry saw action in several maneuvers and is commanded by First Lieutenant George Miller and Lieutenant Lawrence C
The Agricultural Adjustment Administration said wheat farmers will receive 18 to 22 cents a bushel in 1940 as a lower payment than 1939’s 29 cents, due to a larger national acreage allotment of 62,000,000 acres for 1940 versus 55,000,000 this year. Final rates depend on 1939 data and 1940 allotments across all crops sharing payments.
Louis Eugene Rice 71 a long time Winchester businessman died at Memorial Hospital after months of failing health. Born September 23 1868 in New Market Shenandoah County Virginia he moved to Winchester about 48 years ago and led a notable local career. He passed away at his home at 109 Morgan Street.
John Cobb drove a 2600 horsepower car across the Bonneville Salt Flats reaching 352.94 mph on the measured mile. The run began at 6 42 a m six miles south of the markers and Cobb halted plans for a return run, awaiting official timing from A A Pillsbury chief timer who noted the effort may not count as an official record.

Berryville Mills Inc makers of full fashioned silk hosiery will reopen Monday with about 25 workers on the payroll. The plant had idled recently due to the unsettled red silk market, and future conditions remain uncertain.

In Dallas federal court Assistant A G O John Logge described a bribery scheme linking former Louisiana Governor Richard Leche and Weiss to payoffs totaling 148000 dollars tied to piping from the Rodessa field into Texas. Leche and Weiss allegedly took 67000 dollars each in a venal arrangement.
