Landmark Barn Blaze Hurts Firemen and Destroys Property
A spectacular fire last night destroyed a community landmark barn on N. B. Shingle ton's property off Weems Lane. About 35 to 40 firefighters from Shawnee Rouss and South End fought the blaze for nearly four hours. Two young firemen suffered injuries including a scalp bruise and an eyelid laceration. several others were treated for smoke inhalation and exhaustion. The fire drew crowds that hampered efforts, but nearby structures including a corn crib and trucks were saved. Fire Chief Bernard Groves expressed concern over spectator interference.
