Kostel Chosen by Virginia Democrats for Lieutenant Governor
Virginia Democrats pick George J. Kostel a moderate conservative as their nominee for lieutenant governor at a Hampton convention. The vote over Carrington Williams foreshadows a tight race with Henry Howell likely running as an independent and Republican rivals looming. Kostel, 43, Clifton Forge attorney, secured the nomination on the fourth ballot amid party unity concerns and liberal resistance in Northern Virginia and among black and labor voters.
