Savage storm devastates West Virginia towns with heavy rain
A savage storm with 40 50 mph winds and lightning lashed Charles Town and Jefferson County last night, dropping 4.3 inches of rain. The storm, rated the largest in 30 years by observer Lawrence Lloyd, felled trees and blocked highways, snapping power lines across the area.

A severe thunderstorm struck Millwood last night, igniting a barn struck by lightning. Dwight D. Dunton tried to rescue his tractor but was burned, later treated and released from Memorial Hospital. Firefighters battled the blaze through the night as 10,000 to 15,000 bales of hay and tools were lost. The mare Annie’s Dream and foal were feared inside but the search continued. The storm caused flooding and road closures across Frederick, Clarke and Jefferson counties with widespread power and line outages.
