Wytheville mob lynches Black man after jail raid
A 50‑strong masked mob stormed Wythe county jail at dawn abducting Raymond Bird, 31, charged with a criminal incident. Bird was beaten, dragged nine miles, hanged from a tree, and shot. his body was later cut down at the victim’s farm. Sheriff reported the killing and mob identity remained unknown.

Accidental Shooting Leaves Santmyer Wounded in Virginia

Miss Anna Streit Dies in Winchester After Illness
Miss Anna Streit longtime Winchester resident and longtime librarian at Mary Baldwin Seminary in Staunton died after a brief illness at home on National Avenue. She was 81, descended from the Rev. Christian Streit, and had spent 30 years on the Baldwin Seminary faculty. Funeral services were held at the home of Stewart Bell with Rev. F. T. McFaden officiating and burial in Mount Hebron.

London August 16 The British home office announced a packing case delivered at Waterloo station said to contain Lord Kitchener's body was found to hold an empty coffin. Investigations by Chief Constable Weusley and Detective Superintendent Grown led to officials and advisers at the Home Office after reviewing the case. Scotland Yard sought contact with Frank Power who brought the case from Norway where the body was reportedly recovered. The coroner’s inquiry concluded the case contained no human remains and the coffin was new and unused.

A 14 mile hike to Loom and back by J Taylor and Rosenberger followed a long Ice Mountain trek. Cake day yielded thirteen cakes from Winchester and a large turnout. Field day featured cross country and water events with Reno and Kern winning events. Beall Knight earned tenderfoot badge and several scouts gained first class or completed tests.
