Winchester and Frederick County exemption board issues a new call for 100 men to report next Monday at 8:30 AM for physical examinations to fill a quota of 98. About 65 have been certified, 33 remain, and several cases are still pending.
The flower of the American Army was reviewed by General Sibert in France. Amid waving flags and blaring bands the expeditionary force assembled for the first time, presenting a war like scene to spectators.
The Virginia State Board of Health urged parents to keep children under 12 at home to curb a possible infantile paralysis outbreak. No quarantine exists but officials warn carriers, both adults and youths, may spread the disease and emphasize reducing contact and improving sanitation.

T L Lewis district superintendent of the Anti Saloon League of New Jersey is divorced from Anna Ballard Lewis daughter of Rev A E Ballard president of Ocean Grove Camp Meeting. The couple testified that for two years she loved an unnamed church organist and Lewis tolerated it to protect her. The Ballards testified against their daughter describing her confessions of love for the organist.
W Alexander Baker and W Nelson Page of Winchester volunteer for the second training camp at Fort Myer Va on August 27. Both men, past draft age, abandon thriving business interests to serve, as the article notes the equal, hard-edged path in training camp.
A charity dance to benefit the War Relief Society will be held at the Winchester Inn on Friday night August 17. Dancing starts at 9 pm and ends by 1 am with reduced rates from the Inn and orchestra. At an Atlantic port on August 16 reports state German U boats are on extended cruises. Twelve Norwegian sailors from the Benguela said a submarine sank their ship after a five month voyage and used the vessel as a decoy before torpedoing the steamer and sinking with 70 crew aboard.
Miss Elizabeth Kempe Sherrard, a member of a prominent Old Dominion family and organizer of the Ladies Confederate Memorial Association, died at her West Amberst street home after a two month illness. Funeral at Christ Church with both active and honorary pallbearers listed. interment in Mount Hebron.
Two new names were added to the Winchester Chamber of Commerce rolls Mr J W Harrison and W Fultz. Harrison, a former circuit judge now U S Representative, joined during a board meeting at Court House Square and pledged support. Fultz, noted real estate man and police court justice, followed suit after encouragement from city officials.
The Republican voters of Winchester are urged to assemble in a mass convention at Court House Mall on Monday evening August 27 at 8 oclock to elect three delegates and three alternates for the State Convention in Roanoke Virginia on August 30. The Ridgeway West Virginia campmeeting closed with an 8 PM sermon by Rev. F. A. Strother of Edinburg Virginia. A large crowd attended the service which featured a friendship circle and the song God Be With You Till We Meet Again. A Tuesday morning prayer service preceded attendees leaving, and it was decided the camp meet would return next year at the same site.

Mrs. Walter Conrad of Lexington opened a package believed to contain cabbage plants and found an embalmed human arm. The arm likely belonged to her son Raymond Conrad, a brakeman based in Mahoningtown, Pa, with the sender unknown. Investigators traced a box with a hippoast style and a typewriter box.
