Lt. Gov. Fred G. Pollard announced his bid for governor in 1969 saying Virginians need bold and imaginative leadership. William C. Battle called Pollard timing unfortunate and pledged to offer Virginians another alternative in the race.
U S fighter bombers renewed attacks on North Vietnam after Rose delayed carrier missions, with 105 missions against supply lines. In Virginia politics, Lt Gov. Pollard entered the gubernatorial race, pledging leadership to unify voters across colors and social standings, while Battle criticized timing and urged focus on bond issues and elections.
Secretary of Defense Clark M. Clifford says the United States will not ease bombing of North Vietnam until an accord protects American servicemen. He cites the March 31 restriction allowing strikes above the DMZ and awaits Hanoi's clear signal on the lull in fighting.
The town reports August rainfall near 2.37 inches with 15 days left and a year total of 22.22 inches. Over 700 swimmers are set for the State Men's and Women's Senior Championships at Winchester Municipal Pool Friday and Saturday, opening at 9 a.m. with heats at 10 a.m. Finals are planned around 3 p.m. each day.
Addis Ababa Ethiopia AP Emperor Haile Selassie asked Nigeria's Gen Yakubu Gowon to declare a cease-fire while peace talks with Biafra continue. He invited Gowon and Ojukwu to Addis Ababa for a face-to-face session next Monday as forces reportedly press toward Aba. The OAU consultative committee members were also invited to attend. The talks entered their 11th day with no progress announced and reports of an agreement on speed denied by both sides.
Vice President Hubert Humphrey said President Johnson is not running or managing the convention. He cited neutral moves and noted his own push for more support, saying planning officials treat candidates fairly with a slight McCarthy edge.
Nixon launches a two day campaign swing from San Diego with public appearances planned in New York Springfield Lansing and Harrisburg. He will meet with governors and advisers while crime and urban violence are highlighted as campaign issues.
The contract for four-laning Rt. 7 from I-81 to the Clarke County line at Opequon Creek was awarded to Echols Brothers, Inc. of Staunton for 947,890 dollars. The 3.21 mile project will create a new four lane highway parallel to the existing road and resurface the old road, with completion in about 18 months. Bids for the next section to Berryville will be advertised in December.

President Johnson, reportedly briefed on recent medical tests, seemed in good spirits and energetic in a midweek appearance. Doctors say diverticulosis is not disabling though it can worsen with inflammation and may require surgery. White House has not ruled out that possibility.
