Early Winchester Catholic Church and Sacred Heart History
The first Roman Catholic church in Winchester was built in 1805 on Church Street East Lane as a mission of St. Peter's Harper's Ferry. It served few Catholics until 1840, with early priests like Kain Van De Vyver and Costello, later rebuilt in 1870 and dedicated in 1878. Sacred Heart parish grew, with missions to Front Royal and Woodstock, a 1957 school opening, and a 400-family membership under Father Stragisher and Assistant Pastor Blankenship.
