In London the noted publisher Lord Northcliffe died after illness. The death ends a long period of public activity and influential newspaper leadership.
London August 14 Viscount Northcliffe a dominant owner of the London Times the London Daily Mail and other publications died in London after a long illness. He built a worldwide press network and shaped public opinion in Britain. He was noted for bold acquisitions and vigorous journalism.
Mrs Mary Carper widow of James Carper died shortly after 1 pm at her home 121 East Leicester street after a long illness. She was a Shenandoah County native who lived in Winchester many years and leaves a son Edgar Carper of Harrisonburg and a daughter Miss Cora Carper of Washington along with a sister near Hancock Maryland. Her husband preceded her in death.
The Friendship Fire Company picnic committee will meet this evening at eight o'clock to make arrangements for the picnic. R. T. Jones serves as chairman.
Mr. A. M. Baker suffered an acute indigestion attack during Sunday services at Christ Episcopal Church. He was removed to his home on South Washington street in serious condition but improved rapidly by evening and was nearly fully recovered today.

Hugh E. Taylor a Roanoke dining car waiter was fined $100 by a Circuit Court jury on involuntary manslaughter charges for the death of Atwell H. Guard near Kernstown on the Valley Pike last November. The case, tried after five calls and a hung verdict earlier, involved a motorcycle collision that killed the Frederick County farmer. The jury comprised twelve members including Dean Adams and S. E. Brown.
Miss Virginia Whisson of South Braddock street suffered a painful accident while darning a stocking when a large needle slipped through one knee and became lodged in the other. A doctor spent over an hour removing the needle pieces, causing much pain, though her condition is now reported much improved.
The Star announces prizes for the contest Who looks most like Agnes Ayres. First prize of 15 dollars to Miss Bessie DeHaven of DeHaven Virginia. Second prize of 10 dollars to Mrs M Throckmorton of White Post. Third prize a month of Empire Theatre tickets to Mrs Leota Moore of Gainsboro Virginia. Prizes mailed today.
The Irish insurgent leader Commandant McKenny and five other Republicans were killed during fighting that led to Dundalk being captured by irregulars, according to a report from the town this afternoon.
Arrangements were to lay a new concrete sidewalk in front of the county jail on South Market Street Winchester VA with many prisoners to do the work. The sidewalk had been in bad condition for years.
A Winchester promoter reports an $80 000 remaining shortfall after an $120 000 total subscription for the George Washington Hotel stock. A lunch event yielded a $20 000 gain and the drive aims to reach more funds by October first. Subscriptions range from 10 to 10000 with 115 local subscribers totaling about 107000.
Booth Tarkington’s Penrod comes to the Empire for a Wednesday show. The cast includes over fifty players led by Wesley Barry Sunshine Sammy and Mayme Kelso with Charles Meakin, following a prior musical appearance.
A marriage license was issued late Saturday afternoon at the city clerk’s office to Joseph H. Holler a railroad fireman now residing in Mahonington Pa and Miss Mary Vivian Estep daughter of Charles Estep formerly of Martinsburg W V but now of this city.

Shenandoah Valley Agricultural Society directors harshly criticized manager Burley over the 1922 Winchester fair plan and the high costs for entertaining attractions. They questioned expenditures on auto races vaudeville fireworks orchestra and decorations. Burley defended the policy, sought a vote of confidence, and was authorized to spend more to keep the fair premier in Virginia.

A Winchester resident purchases hogs at Austin White's auction on August 22 and receives free delivery.
Mr. W. Lee Fisher and son Douglas travel back from Wardensville West Virginia where they spent time in the mountains. The piece also notes Apple Baskets and gasoline engines with belting for every pit WIN and promotes orchard supplies and summer fruit baskets.
Joseph Baltimore, a colored man, was shot and killed yesterday morning in Front Royal Virginia by Sergeant Smith after Baltimore, who had threatened the officer with a stone, attacked him during an attempt to arrest on a warrant charging cutting and slashing another man. Baltimore died en route to jail. the shot reportedly struck him in the stomach as the officer warned him. An inquest was reportedly held as the town reacted to the fatal force.
Reports confirm that Baltimore and Ohio Railway east or westbound No. 15 derailed near Hancock Maryland last Thursday. Several passengers were slightly injured by flying glass and jarring as coaches and tender left the rails.
A Loudoun Mutual Insurance representative examined a fire that destroyed Dewey Chorpenning’s store and E N Hardy’s warehouse near Greenspring. Chorpenning carried 1500 dollars of insurance, with actual losses likely higher. Hardy had 400 dollars on the building. Suspicions arose that the blaze was set afire while the store was closed for the night.
The Baltimore Conference of Mission of the Methodist Episcopal Church South plans a rural school for pastors and leaders in the Winchester district. The state will supply experts to lecture on rural vital issues, with church specialists contributing to the program. Continued on page 2.
