Virginia military units are reported among the first contingents loaded for departure to France. Officials describe rapid mobilization as the war effort accelerates. News notes emphasize readiness and national resolve.
War Department designates 26 state National Guard units to form the Forty second Division nicknamed the Rainbow Division. Units from Virginia, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, New York, Ohio, Indiana, Alabama, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Maryland, South Carolina, California, Nevada, North Carolina, Kansas, Texas, New Jersey, Michigan, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Colorado, Oregon, and Washington DC will join the new division for service abroad in France.
Notice issued by Shirley Carter director Valley Turnpike Co states tolls will be collected in August for the year beginning September 1 1917 and ending September 1 1918.

The body of John Irwin Redman 30 a Winchester Va salesman for International Harvester arrived by train from Detroit amid questions over a misdirected burial. Funeral services were held at Mount Hebron Cemetery conducted by Rev Dr George S Bowers as pallbearers named. In Detroit a report described Redman shooting Miss Parsons then killing himself. Miss Parsons survived.
Mr Robert Curl son of Mr and Mrs George Curl of this city spent the weekend with relatives and returned yesterday to Washington where he is stationed in the United States Navy He enlisted about four months ago and says he is well pleased with the service.

Sixty men from Company I Second Virginia Infantry of Winchester received orders to leave for Roanoke tomorrow morning. Lt. Fred S. Anderson will lead the recruiting squad, with transport via Baltimore and Ohio and connections through Strasburg Junction to Elkton. Recruits lack uniforms and arms but will be equipped on arrival.
Thousands of Greeks are said to have suffered at the hands of Turks in Asia Minor. Aivali refugees now in Matylene sent a protest to the State Department alleging destruction of their historic city and grave abuses including sexual violence against women and girls.
Mr W Davis Conrad of New York visited his mother Mrs D B Conrad on West Water Street Sunday and departed yesterday for Washington. He has been accepted for the next training camp at Fort Myer Virginia and will report August 26.
Merchants in Winchester prepare for the Dollar Day Sale under the Chamber of Commerce. Stores clear counters for displays, with many window signs announcing a Special One Dollar Sale Here Wednesday. Residents expect a large turnout for discounted waists dresses hosiery and household goods priced at $1 for tomorrow only.
Berryville hosts a show with $2500 in purses for show horses and $1200 in racing purses. Two big lays scheduled for August 22 and 23. The event touts top racing stock and a promised big treat for attendees.
Real estate agent Fultz sold two late on West Leicester street for Judge T. W. Harrison to Mrs. Schum and to her daughter Mrs. 8. H. Edmonds. It is understood they will erect handsome residences on this rapidly developing street. The consideration was not stated.
Justice Fultz heard numerous auto related cases in which defendants were fined for violations of the anti parking ordinance. C E Koontz Paul Jackson Fred Brichenger and Hunter Benner each paid 2.50, Howard Lutrell paid 2.50, and W H Louthan received 3.50 for speeding following a laundry driver admitted a minor fault. The judge lowered Louthan’s fine from 10 to 3.50 for truthful testimony. Bessie Young of Pittsburgh is visiting Mrs. Derrickson in Leicester Street.
Dr. Julian F. Ward the mayor of Winchester was arrested by Chief M A Doran on a warrant from City Manager A M Field for violating the sprinkler after 8 PM ordinance. He paid 5 and costs totaling 6 60 to Police Justice W L Fults.
Winchester and Frederick county exemption board passed 25 claims yesterday. Eighteen were exempt or discharged, seven denied and certified for service in the new army. Names of those released or denied appear, with many married men and dependents noted. Page five continues.
Mr. Le J. Washburn with his son in law and daughter along with Mr. and Mrs. Stoll and two Misses Lindamood travel from McKeesport Pennsylvania to Camp Rhodes at Berry’s Ferry Clarke County Virginia for an extended stay on the Shenandoah River. The Lindamood party at the campsite includes A J Lindamood P G Rhodes and two granddaughters Geraldine and Lois Holt. Additional campers expected later in the week include Misses Louise Forney Elizabeth Rose Walton Lindamood Elsie Snapp Nancy Shiner and Mr and Mrs Adam Forney.
