British troops opened fire as rioters attempted to storm tanks and ships to protest deportation of 1,000 illegal Jewish immigrants to Cyprus. A girl was killed and several police and troops were injured.
A threatened 8 000 member CIO food workers strike at Campbell Soup Co was averted when the CIO union and Campbell officials accepted a government conciliation service compromise. The walkout could have disrupted a $5 000 to mato crop in New Jersey and Pennsylvania grown by 3 000 farmers.
In Tokyo on August 13 General MacArthur sent a War Secretary note praising wartime contributions and peace efforts. A memorial service will honor 92 Winchester and Frederick County men who died in World War II at Handley High School esplanade. The event, hosted by the American Legion and VFW, includes a parade from Stewart Street to Handley Campus, a concert by McIlWee’s Municipal Band, and remarks by Rev. W. J. Hadden and Legion/VFW leaders.

London report states H. G. Wells died at 4 p m at his home in Regent's Park after years of diabetes and declining health. The famed author of science fiction and The Outline of History had been seriously ill since May 1944. Funeral planned as private.
Washington reports that the federal government will add 152.2 million dollars annually to state public assistance programs under broadened Social Security Act provisions, lifting total federal support to about 560.3 million. Senator Pepper argues for a minimum program including monthly payments of 150 dollars to unmarried seniors over 60 and 200 dollars to married couples, plus hospital and prenatal care, with funding via a population levy. Alabama would gain about 2.57 million more, bringing its total to roughly 6.52 million in aid.
