Admiral greets Tractor Party members at advance base after perilous voyage. Naval explorer reports five months alone, sickened by kerosene fumes in hut. Mother receives cheering radio news from Little America.
Mrs. Richard E. Byrd of Amherst Street received a telegram announcing the safe arrival at Bolling Field of the expedition that set out to reach Admiral Byrd at Little America. The message said Byrd had found the party thin and weak but buoyant, and that Little America base marked their reunion with the admiral after five months studying Antarctic weather.
Admiral Richard E. Byrd greeted the three-man tractor party after their long trek across the Ross Sea ice barrier. Dr. Richard C. Poulter and two expedition members reached Byrd at the advance weather base, 123 miles by trail from Little America, amid storms and mechanical delays. Byrd offered hot soup as he emerged from his snow-sunk shack.
A new novel set around Natchez Mississippi titled So Red the Rose by Stark Young earns acclaim from prominent authors and is in demand at Handley Library. Critics praise its lively southern voices, vivid descriptions, and depiction of life before during and after the Civil War.
The Labor Department summoned Fred Keightly of Philadelphia to Washington to discuss the aluminum strike with interested parties including Boris Shishkin of the AFL and Aluminum Company of America representatives. Lloyd Garrison helped draft Keightly for the mediation role amid prior failed conciliation efforts. In Pittsburgh, union officials accused A C of A of refusing to negotiate with AFL unions, while mediation moves proceed.
Norfolk Virginia August 13. Full field inspection of two regiments of the Ninety first Infantry Brigade Virginia National Guard opened the second week of the annual training at Camp Peery Virginia Beach. General Waller and Col C C Early praised company battalion and regimental commanders on the men and equipment.
The USDA reports New England apple crops on August 1 were seven percent lighter than forecast. Damage from a severe winter and ongoing insect and disease ravages including scab curculio contributed to the reduced outlook across the region.
Rouss Fire Company calls a special meeting Monday evening August 13 at 8 o clock to finalize travel plans and issue uniforms for the Waynesboro convention. Presidency by M D Weaver.
Dr. G. C. Engle of Lankenau Hospital Philadelphia will speak to the Medical Society of Northern Virginia at White Post on Tuesday August 14. The meeting opens at 11 and luncheon will follow. Other speakers include Dr. H. I. Pifer Dr. G. H. Smith and Dr. F. C. Stuart from Winchester with topics on the acute abdomen inguinal hernias coma of the tonsil and automobile accidents. The society covers Shenandoah Page Warren Rappahannock Clarke Frederick and Winchester city with 72 members.
In Paducah Kentucky police keep a man in guarded confinement suspecting him of being Joe Palmer the Texas prison escapee. He boasted of killings and claimed to be Palmer before being identified, then grew anxious about returning to Texas.
The Federal State Crop Reporting Service bulletin notes good apple quality overall with favorable rains since August 1. It estimates the commercial crop at 1,680,000 barrels versus last year’s 1,750,000 and the five year average of 2,680,000, with Shenandoah Valley dry weather causing some delay in growth and portions of the crop expected to pack well in North and South Valleys.
Federal Trade Commission filed a record summary showing Tri-Utilities Corporation assets with a book value of 46 million were sold for 4.81 million after receivership began in 1931. The firm hired Ohrstream and Company to manage the market for its stock and debentures. Also notes travelers and social calls of several Lutz and Preston family members visiting Detroit and Strasburg.
Rain Sunday adds 0.72 inches, bringing August total to 2.14 inches per Winchester Research Laboratory records. August rainfall so far is below the 21 year average of 3.29 inches. Southern county areas saw general rain except Stephens City. northern Shenandoah counties from Strasburg to Cedar Creek reported heavy rainfall.

Mrs. Leonard Gosslyn Fontaine a leading prosecution witness in the Walter Legenza case escaped uninjured in a car crash near Hanover Courthouse Three others were hurt but not seriously Washington policewoman Mrs Mansfield suffered burns and was conscious Sergeant Truscott and Postal Inspector Deward were injured The car was en route to Richmond where Fontaine was to testify in the postponed Legenza trial.
Richmond Virginia August 13 Smouldering ashes left no clues to guide officers in their search for bandits who robbed and blasted Club Forest a reputed gambling resort. Buddy Williams watchman said two masked men woke him and the cook and forced them against the wall before dynamiting the building. After the first blast later explosions wrecked the place and left no evidence. Miss Sydney Thompson of Washington DC is visiting Mrs J W Riley.
Winchester Evening Star educational tour travelers will ride the Baltimore and Ohio line to Chicago for the World's Fair. The trip includes six states with scenic views from Harpers Ferry to Cumberland and via the Alleghenies, offering historic Potomac River Valley scenery and mountain elevations around 3,000 feet.
An old fashioned northeaster blew gusntily down the Atlantic coast bringing rain and welcome chill from New England to Virginia. Winds from low pressure areas carried rain squalls into Pennsylvania New York Maryland and northern Virginia. The system offered relief to those enduring high humidity and heat and was expected to bring more rain to arid regions.
Minneapolis truck drivers rejected the latest peace plan from federal mediators as about 400 walked off at Portland demanding higher wages and better working conditions. Father Francis Haas reported to Washington that employers had submitted a new proposal and the Department of Labor was asked to intervene.
Washington August 13 Senator Schall of Minnesota predicted that President Roosevelt may fire Hugh S. Johnson to create a White House alibi in the newsprint code dispute. He criticized a proposal for a special board with authority over newsprint prices, a plan publishers oppose as monopolistic.

Hopewell Virginia August 13 former employees of Tubize Chatilon Corporation vote to decide representation for collective bargaining. Hopewell Local No 2 170 United Textile Workers and the Tri State Progressive Association seek a majority. election overseen by NLRB special representative Nathan Shefferman after a week long strike investigation. Plant officials say the plant remains closed since June 19.
In Cork Ireland Aug 13 a seizure sale of farm cattle led to a riot as farmers attacked barricaded gates, driving through with cars and charging like infantry. Detectives tried to block the assault firing revolvers and rifles, fatally injuring one man and wounding several others.
At a White House drought conference President Roosevelt ordered federal purchase of foodstuffs to prevent waste and directed a plan for government buying of hay and small-quantity fruits. Aubrey Williams and Secretary Wallace to draft the program while dismissals for political activity are authorized. In Des Moines drought drives Iowa corn south to aid starving livestock with large shipments to Missouri Kansas Nebraska Oklahoma and Texas.
The Frederick county Board of Supervisors commends county treasurer R. S. Smith for extensive work on repapering and beautifying the county courthouse interior. The board also authorizes Smith to buy more paint to finish the windows and covers for the radiators.
Berlin reports orders to transfer 8 500 Austrian Nazi legion members from Germany to a labor camp in East Prussia. Additional 4 500 sent to Pomerania and Brandenburg and 2 000 assigned to labor battalions near the Danish border.
