Time Is Running Out for Europe's Grand Hotels
The piece contrasts the old grand hotels of Europe with the rise of standardized, impersonal service. It notes enduring examples like the Sacher in Vienna and Ritz in Madrid, and laments the decline of the big hotel while praising the enduring appeal of refined pensions across cities such as Vienna, Venice, and Munich. It also highlights the pensione as a beloved, frugal abroad home for writers, students, and travelers, and warns of their gradual disappearance.
