Davis plans an early intensive campaign push to win the race. Key figures and local party leaders endorse the strategy aiming to mobilize supporters and build momentum before the primary.
Special to the news service says Congressman George C. Peery of Tazewell is expected to win re election as Democrats dominate the Ninth Virginia district. Headquarters opened in Bristol with George R. Combs in charge as Peery campaigns across towns and rural areas.
Democratic nominee John W. Davis launched the 1924 campaign in Clarksburg addressing honesty in government and charging Republicans with widespread corruption. He outlined an agricultural program promising laws and administration to aid farmers and stressed a government that serves the needy while fighting graft and privilege. He planned to speak in Columbus on August 26 before heading to New York and national headquarters.
The Junior Bible Class of Burnt Factory S S presents comedy Mrs Black's Pink Tea at Greenwood schoolhouse on Wednesday August 13 at 8 oclock. Admission 10 and 15 cents. The Ladies Aid Society will serve refreshments after the play. Public invited. Next night is rainy.
The uniform committee will issue uniforms starting Thursday evening August 14 for the Harrisonburg trip. Come early and get yours. Chairman D. F. Hohr. The Commercial Hotel advertises good eats and quick service at Gill hours on B. Piccadilly St.
James B. Russell, a prominent local financier, found a bareheaded unshaven man intruding in his South Washington library. The visitor questioned if he were in jail, then appeared dazed and barefoot. A second man claimed to take him home, but details remain unclear. Sheriff unable to identify the pair.
The Gertrude Rask, a damaged supply ship aiding the round the world fliers, reached Angmagsalik Greenland after breaking ice. Weather eased, allowing preparations for the final takeoff from Iceland by Lt. Smith and Lt. Nelson. Meanwhile Boston I departed Eastport for Pictou to await the flyers.
Southwest Virginia Greenbrier and Pocahontas county West Virginia ewes described as young and large with black faces. George R. Green White Post Virginia invites buyers to see before purchasing promising savings. Also notices Gore M W of A picnic August 23 1p and a lost collie dog with reward offered.
Troops of Boy Scouts returned from a ten day camp on the pond river. Merit badge tests were completed in swimming life saving handicraft and firemanship. Field day crowned Lawrence Jones Billy Kerny Charles Baker Kenneth Henry Canter and Leo Cather with top scores. Tent 2 won the tent contest as scouts departed for Winchester.
The Eternal City drew a great ovation at the Empire Theatre yesterday and will be presented again tonight at 7 and 9 oclock with a special program and prologue. Verzi's Serenaders provide a modern jazz interlude between shows at 8 45. Washington Empire Orchestra accompanies every feature.
Putnam Connecticut August 12 The First National Bank of Putnam closed its doors today an hour after opening following the suicide of cashier J Harold Kilpatrick at his home last Thursday The closing notice signed by the chief national bank examiner stated the directors acted for the protection of the institution whose funds are admitted to be impaired
The W C T U will hold a meeting at the Friends Church on Thursday August 14 at 9 30 a m Dues remain due from members who have not yet paid.
Community yard party at Burnt Factory on Friday August 15 raises funds for the building program. Proceeds go toward the local project and support expected attendees.
Washington reports the August crop forecast shows a shrinkage of 2,910,000 barrels from July. The forecast totals 183,691,000 bushels for the farm crop, with state by state changes including New York down 1,340,000 barrels since July and Oregon down slightly while Washington shows a gain.
A three week drought in Winchester ends with a soaking rain of 1.1 inches late yesterday and last night. The Winchester field laboratory notes the last rainfall was July 21 at 0.33 inches while temperatures peaked at 106 degrees last Thursday. Locals recalled forecasts that a circus on Monday the 11th would bring relief.
San Francisco August 12 The Mercer river fire expanded toward Yosemite National Park with about 12 000 acres burned including 4 000 acres of heavily timbered Sierra lands. About 200 civilians and 150 road camp convicts fought the blaze near El Portal.
The Chicago trial featured the state finishing cross examination of Dr H B Hulbert defense alienist and moving to rebuttal testimony in the Leopold and Loeb case. State's Attorney Crowe challenged the theory of functional disorders while highlighting Dr Hulbert's role in medicine. The defense planned 45 minutes more for its remaining witness as it nears resting its case.
The ceremony occurred at 7 30 in the morning August 11 at the minister's West Leicester street residence. Rev Dr William Hervey Woods officiated. The bride wore white canton crepe with pink Kills ney roses and the couple planned a southern motor trip after the ceremony. They will reside on a farm near White Post where Mr Colaw farms.

President Coolidge’s campaign schedule is tight with few engagements. He is unlikely to travel beyond Washington for speeches unless the campaign situation shifts, with only the nomination acceptance address in Washington and the October 1 unveiling of a memorial statue as booked events.
The Rev. and Mrs. Charles Noyes Tyndall of Memphis Tennessee arrived for a visit to relatives and friends. Mrs Tyndall formerly Miss Rebecca Lewis, daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Robert H Lewis of this city. Their daughter Miss Cary Tyndall has been here for several weeks.
Glenn Gardner, tenant of Chas. R. McCann’s farm near Stephenson, reports the loss of two horses in the past week. The deaths are believed to result from eating mouldy hay, with the effect taking place within several days.
An elderly county official, Charles L. Nicodemus, was severely injured while mowing on a Lenore farm when a horse bolted and caused him to fall. He recalls riding with an employee and reports multiple injuries including broken bones, with neighbors helping after the incident.
