Winchester hosts the Cumberland Valley and Virginia State Firemen's associations as more than 20 000 visitors are expected. Delegations arrive from Harrisonburg and Suffolk with officials preparing for tonight's plenary session.
A Yard Party benefit event hosted by the S. S. Class on Welltown Church lawn Thursday August 13. Proceeds support church activities with proceeds directed to church funds.
City Sergeant C Lee Barr reports arrest of Thomas Anastos formerly of Winchester in Buffalo N Y on a felony charge of removing property held under attachment. Ramsey and Company of Martinsburg WV had a lien on $800 furniture with $325 unpaid. Anastos allegedly moved the goods to Winchester and left town. Buffalo police say he was arrested then released on bail. Barr to seek requisition to bring him back for trial.
The Nautilus, the submarine used by Sir Hubert Wilkins to reach the North Pole area, was reported adrift off Tromsø Norway in Arctic seas with an unreparable engine fault. The crew tried repairs all night and feared grounding due to lack of an anchoring option in those waters.
At an executive committee meeting the Winchester Fire Department decided all trucks and personnel will participate as a single uniformed escort of honor. Members are asked to report in uniform an hour before the parade at Friendship Hall.

John T. Roddey former Rock Hill mayor and cotton broker died this morning in a Montreat hospital after a prolonged illness. Survived by wife Eliza Willis Roddey and three sons and a daughter, with siblings including banker Joseph Roddey and Mrs Whitmer. Funeral expected in Rock Hill late this week.
