Washington reports the Agriculture Department projects record corn at 3.506 billion bushels and wheat at 1.284 billion for the season based on conditions as of August 1. The forecast signals lower future prices and expanded livestock output, with total grain production likely surpassing all prior seasons.
First Baptist Church will sponsor a kindergarten for children aged four to six starting September 13. Dr E T Clark, pastor, announces the school directed by Mrs John Wade Jones, a Radford College graduate with extensive kindergarten and public school experience, and to be on the National Kindergarten Assn approved list. Enrolment expected to reach at least ten children.
Cumberland Valley Volunteer Fireman's Assn plans a stock of prizes totaling 720 dollars for a street parade in Williamsport Maryland on Saturday August 21. Local fire companies and at least two CVVFA groups will compete for awards including 100 and 75 dollars for best appearing units and 100 dollars for the largest uniformed company.
Judge Erle Edwards in Trial Justice court fined George Frank Beaver of Winchester and Wiley Willard Meade of Gore five dollars each for allowing unlicensed operators. Brady Maxie James Meade of Gore and Donald M. Bowen of Winchester also paid five dollars for lacking operator licenses. Guy Jennings Oats of Gore paid five dollars and costs for no inspection sticker. Victor Chester Kline of Gore paid nineteen dollars and twenty five cents for improper registration and vehicle defects.
The State Health department reported seven new infantile paralysis cases in Virginia. The tally for the year reaches 146 with patients including a 7 year old girl in Richmond a 3 and 4 year old pair in Floyd county a 16 year old boy and 26 year old man in Lynchburg a 10 year old girl in Campbell county and a 6 year old boy in Culpeper county.
William S. O'Brien age 86 and serving his fourth term as West Virginia secretary of state died at his Buckhannon home. The longtime public official passed away August 10 at his residence.
Berlin authorities faced a shift as a Russian sponsored unit crowded the regular city staff from city hall in the Soviet sector. Paul Fuellsack leads a search for additional space while the city contemplates separate western offices.
County officers arrested Kenneth Armel Roy Arnold and Walter Fincham on charges of break ing and entering and grand larceny. Guns including a Winchester shotgun and rifles were recovered in woods near Armel's home. The trio, all residents west of Winchester on Route 50, were jailed with no preliminary hearing date set. Armel had prior theft convictions and a recent parole.
Dr and Mrs L M Bell subscribed 3900 to Winchester Memorial hospital building fund to establish a bed in semi private room 210 as a memorial to Sir Alexander Fleming discoverer of penicillin The Bell describes penicillin as a major advance in medical science and a powerful tool against infection reinforcing safer surgery for patients.
Reckless driving charges filed against Jack C. Allen of Martinsburg RFD 2 and Roy W. Miller of 8 Virginia Ave follow a collision at Millwood and Spring Crest Aves. Miller’s Chevrolet and Allen’s Ford sustained about $150 and $50 in damage respectively.
John Jones will celebrate his 100th birthday with a community purse of $100. John W. Rosenberger is organizing contributions through Thursday mid morning. Jones, a longtime resident at 12 W Bond St with wife Kate, helped build his home and now relies on welfare aid.
An inquest is set for tomorrow into the death of Mrs. Frances Beman 34 of Front Royal. Coroner Dr D M Kipps said she died from a skull fracture after apparently jumping or falling from a second floor window at 513 East Main Street Front Royal about 2 15 this morning. The body was dead when first found and a screen lay on the ground nearby. Mrs Beman had contusions but death was caused by the skull fracture. The Bomans had moved to Front Royal about three months ago for work related to a radio station opening soon.
Norfolk Virginia August 10 reports the Norfolk Women’s Democratic club votes a five day meat boycott. The plan targets 250 members who will refrain from buying meat for five days and each member will enlist five more housewives.
President Truman signed a housing bill into law today and condemned Republican leaders for blocking a broader measure he said would provide decent housing for millions. He argued the Taft Ebender Wagner proposal offered public housing slum clearance and rural housing but was sidelined during the extra session.
States' Rights Democrats gathered in Houston to map strategies for winning Solid South electoral votes. Governor Thurmond of South Carolina and Governor Wright of Mississippi prepared to formally accept their nominations. Texas Dixiecrats vented after Austin’s rejection of a Thurmond ticket referendum.
The horseshoe pitching champion at the Winchester Elks Club picnic will receive a gold ring. A tie clasp and lapel button go to second and third place. The 1773 unprovoked killing of Logan's family, a flashpoint in Virginia frontier history, was charged to Captain Michael Cresap by Logan. Historians Doddridge and Jefferson supported the claim, while Jacobs and Kercheval denied it. Cresap later served in Dunmore’s War and commanded a Maryland Rifles unit in the Continental Army.
Washington reports the State department advised the House un American activities committee it can serve a subpoena on Russian woman teacher Oksana Stepanovna Kosenkina who is at the Soviet consulate in New York. She has no immunity and is subject to U.S. law.
A large crowd attended the opening night of the fun festival at Old Airport on Route 50 to benefit Winchester Memorial Hospital. Kiwanis ran stands and booths. Lions take over tonight led by Marvin Weaver with Paul Anderson and Ben Cather assisting. 20 volunteers expected. gambling stands were curtailed by state law yet overall gross reported good. Delmer Robinson optimistic a healthy sum will be added to the hospital fund.

Duncan C. Lee, a 33 year old former OSS operative, denied giving secret information to Elizabeth Bentley amid accusations she made. Bentley testified Lee spoke of something secret at Oak Ridge and OSS operations in China and the Balkans. Lee, shot down on a China mission, swore he never disclosed information to unauthorized persons.
