Black Soldiers at Rhodesian Army Face Civil War Risks
The Rhodesian African Rifles recruit largely black soldiers who fight fellow blacks against Mugabe and Nkomo guerrillas. Recruits earn about 960 a year with free care and board, while pay parity exists in higher ranks. Amid looming black majority rule, the army stresses loyalty, job access, and a rare multiracial officer presence, with about 20 000 regulars and 35 000 reservists planned.

Californians Rebuild in Same Trouble Spots
After heavy rains and floods, Southern Californians face renewed rebuilding on fragile slopes with few flood insurance plans. The Genofile family plans to rebuild their La Crescenta home with an added second story to cope with future floods.
