Chicago reports show staple prices rising across all markets as July crop damage is pegged at record levels. Government figures indicate a 221,000,000 bushel cut, underscoring shortages despite President Wilson's congressional address.
H Lam a farmer from Ride and Stephens City was fined 2.60 dollars and costs in the county magistrate court for aiding Sam Spencer a Pegro convict at the convict road camp near Winchester. Lam admitted he furnished a suit of clothes while Spencer wore convict garb and later was captured with Lam's help. Sheriff Pannett shared a 20 dollar reward with Lam. Prosecutor T R Cather warned that aiding a prisoner or not notifying authorities is a misdemeanor and harsher penalties will follow.
A Winchester cold storage cooperative offers $150,000 preferred stock to enlarge facilities and provide storage options for apple growers. Subscriptions total $152,000 as of August 6 with open books until August 16 and prorated allotments. Only fruit growers eligible to join this mutual association against foreign interests.

Mrs Isabelle Ann Campbell aged 89 and a Shenandoah County native died at 10 20 night at her son Rosser L Campbell's home two miles south of Winchester due to age. Paris reports on August 9 say General Pershing was suddenly recalled to the United States possibly canceling a planned Sunday meeting with King Albert of Belgium. In Washington Secretary Baker and General March stated they knew of no recall order, and White House officials offered no confirmation.

Congress man Harrison offered a cavalry troop for exhibition but the committee declined to accept, planning a full day of events and a late-night parade.
