Fire officials warned on resource limits as a major California blaze near Big Sur threatened watersheds and could grow, with 3,000 firefighters assigned to protect the Carmel River system and nearby communities. In Alaska, the fires stretch over a Delaware-sized area with 1,200 firefighters on 28 blazes and 16 unmanned fires, the largest at 335,000 acres north of Nome.
