A fire in Amercoeur Coal Mines Belgium trapped about 270 miners 2,485 feet underground after elevator cables melted. Seven escaped to surface while rescuers with oxygen faced heat and flames as they tried to reach the gallery maze.
Virginia delegates to the Democratic National Convention favor former Gov. John S. Battle as a vice presidential possibility with Lyndon Johnson and Stuart Symington as secondary choices. The polling among 64 delegates shows Battle as the first choice, though Battle himself refuses to have his name presented at the convention.
A six story Richmond grain elevator and warehouse sustained over 100000 in damages after a multi alarm fire started near the fourth floor. Fire units from eleven engines and three trucks responded. the blaze was first seen by Douglas Austin.
Massive blast in Cali Colombia levels eight blocks after seven dynamite trucks explode in a crowded downtown district. An 8-year-old, Leroy Black, was held on a murder charge in Columbia Pennsylvania for kicking 9-year-old Darlene Houghendobler last June 18 after she refused a kiss. He was arraigned and held without bail for Lancaster County Grand Jury action. The district attorney expects juvenile court handling.

Walter Williams aged 113, the oldest surviving Civil War veteran, lies seriously ill at his east Texas farm home. A daughter from Houston says he cannot be moved to a hospital and a Normanagee doctor treats him at home for dropsy. Williams, born November 14, 1842 in Adawama County Mississippi, served as forage master for Hood's Texas Brigade. He is one of three living Confederate veterans and the only one in Texas.

Negotiations between O Sullivan Rubber and the Rubber Workers union resume tomorrow at 1 p m at the George Washington Hotel to seek a settlement in the 87 day strike. Union Local 511 meets at 3 p m to brief members while the company maintains replacements will stay on. A union official died today as counsel prepared the terms of the forthcoming proposal.
In the final session before a new administration, Berryville Council moved to widen pave and add a sidewalk to Lincoln Avenue leading to Clarke County High School. Mayor Edward Berlin leaves Aug. 31 after four years. bids to be obtained to start the project quickly, estimated at about $3,000 plus right of way costs.
Stephens City decides at August meeting to move town offices and police court by Sept 1 to the former post office space on Main Street in the Lemley Building. The post office moved Aug 1 to the corner building. council also adopted amended Virginia motor vehicle code and appointed French T. Reid deputy clerk.
