President Truman signed legislation to end all installment credit controls by November 1, despite calls to extend restraints. The measure replaces existing limits with three months of continued control and allows reimposition during national emergencies.
Dr. John T. Thornton Jr. of Charlottesville comes to Winchester to partner with Dr. Thomas A. Gibson in infant care and diseases. He earned his MD from the University of Virginia in 1939, interned at Mercy Hospital Pittsburgh, trained at St Louis Children's, served five years in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in the southwest Pacific and the Philippines, discharged as Lt. Col., and now resides at 21 S Stewart St.
The Five day forecast for Virginia shows near normal temperatures for the period with a warmer Monday followed by cooler conditions Tuesday. Expect moderate precipitation as showers on Monday totaling about one half inch.
Federal investigators report a number of holes in a basement gas pipe at the Pau line Beauty shop in Harrisonburg where 11 people died. The findings suggest corrosion and weak pipe allowed a gas leak to fill the basement and ignite, with a match triggering the blast. Col Graham Dougherty chairs the American Legion post memorial committee backing the movement with a poll showing support for improving the Berryville Community Building as the best living memorial.
Howard Hughes agreed to place his private papers at the Senate war investigating committee. The move follows a subpoena issued by Chairman Ferguson after papers were contested during hearings on Hughes warplane contracts.
Chicago August 8. Corn prices surged to new highs on the Board of Trade as dry weather gripped the Midwest especially Iowa. Cash corn traded at 2.39 1 2 a bushel, surpassing the 1917 peak, while the September futures rose to 2.30 1 4 per bushel. Wheat and oats also showed strength with No 1 white corn at 2.35 and No 1 yellow at 2.25.
Attorney General Tom Clark said he would study the charge by Howard Hughes that Senator Brewster offered to halt an investigation of Hughes war contracts if Hughes would back a merger between Trans World Airlines and Pan American Airways. Brewster heads the Senate war investigating committee.
The attorney said they could not locate Johnny Meyer, publicity chief for Hughes, who failed to appear at the hearing today. Ferguson issued a subpoena for him as Hughes entered with his lawyer Thomas Slack, prompting applause from spectators.
Arkansas case centers on Anne McMath who fired a .45 caliber pistol at Hal McMath after he allegedly mistreated her. Sidney McMath, a former Marine colonel and political figure, says his wife acted in hysteria during a confrontation at their home. He seeks a grand jury review and a special prosecutor.

In Athens gold rose sharply amid fears of internal violence and possible war if Communist forces establish a free state in Northern Greece. The gold sovereign traded at 170000 drachma, above the stabilized rate of 135000, as the $300000 military aid program began. A government army command shakeup followed.

In Fairfax county a Democratic primary ended with two candidates tied at 2 853 votes each for a House seat. Attorney General A P Staples said a certified tie would be settled by lot after the state board of elections and Fairfax clerk of courts handle the official process.
A 35 year old truck driver named Prank Paul toppled from a long stair flight in Pittsburgh. He died on impact about 40 feet below. A smashed chocolate box and a card reading To my wife on our 11th anniversary were found near the body.
New York reports Johnston president of the Motion Picture Association says the export ban to Britain will continue indefinitely. He notes about 15 percent of American films are affected by the prohibition.

Vicky Ann Dunn 23 month old daughter of Mr and Mrs John Dunn Jr of Front Royal Road almost drowned Thursday when she fell into an open cesspool in the backyard. The mother grabbed for the hand as it disappeared, then pulled the child to safety as the father and physician arrived. The child escaped injury but was kept under observation and given penicillin as a precaution. The Dunn family recently immigrated from England and has a five month old son.
