Washington reports six of eight Nazi saboteurs were electrocuted in District of Columbia jail at noon. Ernest Burger and George Cash received life and 30 year sentences respectively for aiding U S prosecutions. others were put to death for espionage and sabotage. Military commission had begun trial a month prior.
The city hosts a war hero believed to be welcomed by New York's leading citizens. During a speech he is quoted as saying he has too much to say, while a council member replies with a puzzling remark about teams.

London dispatch from August 8 reports a German submariner claimed to have sunk 21,000 tons in 10 days near the St. Lawrence.
