The Italian submarine F-14 sank after a collision in the upper Adriatic. Thirty seven or 27 crew perished from poisonous fumes and drowning, despite hours of salvage work to attach air lines and lift the vessel. Two officers were among the dead as divers recovered the wreck near Pola.
