A sudden tornado swept through Carper's Valley four miles east of Winchester, demolishing the brick school, uprooting trees, and unroofing barns. No injuries reported. The storm weakened near Winchester after causing heavy rain and lightning.
Arthur Ritter of this city reported a valuable colt named Hart in a storm was injured yesterday. The small stable housing the colt was blown from its foundations and carried hundreds of yards into an alfalfa field in three pieces. One side of the structure remained intact. The roof and rafters landed far away, digging a deep hole in the earth.
Storm roars into the Gulf of Mexico forcing hundreds to flee Port Arthur and seek shelter in public buildings. Weather officials warn winds near 90 miles per hour along the Texas coast between the Sabine Pass and the Gulf as the hurricane advances.

Washington August 7. The House Military Committee voted to hear five more witnesses on the Burke Wadsworth compulsory training bill led by Secretary Knox to testify next week including Gen John J Pershing and Harry Woodring. The panel had earlier closed hearings but reversed after a morning “love feast” and 11 to 10 vote. Speed urged. bill would require registration of men 21 to 30 and draft up to 1,000,000 for a year of training within 12 months. A minority report contends peace time regs clash with American ideals.
D E Leatherman of 326 West Piccadilly street urged council to consider dog nuisance remedies after a pack of hounds near his home disrupted sleep. He cited other neighbors in distress and noted a house under construction on Tennyson avenue. The matter prompted advice that courts declare a nuisance and potential owner outreach before action. Leslie D. Kline of 303 Fairmont avenue, Frederick schools division superintendent, owned the hounds.
Washington reports the State Department asked Ambassador Kennedy in London for the full text of John P. Cudahy’s interview given yesterday. Cudahy described Belgium’s food situation as nearing famine and his remarks drew sharp British press criticism. Sumner Welles said the interview was granted without prior State Department authority and will not be speculated on until the exact text is reviewed.
Mrs Emily Ridgeway Funston Ward 76 a Winchester figure for decades died at 5 30 am at 211 South Washington Street. Widow of Robert Marion Ward she lived in Winchester most of life and contributed to Church, animal protection, Century Club and Turner Ashby UDC. Survived by sister Mrs Edwin Hinks and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral Friday at Christ Church 3 pm with Rev R B Nelson. Interment Mt Hebron.
